There is probably one thing worse than finding Horsemeat in your burger….

…..And that is finding horseSHIT in your burger.

The horsemeat in burgers furore is really a fuss over nothing.  Eating horsemeat will not kill you unlike eating a dog’s liver which will do you a lot of harm.

Yes, there may be issues with eating horsemeat for those who are religiously forbidden to do so, but surely if you are THAT strict you would be purchasing your meat from a specialist supplier anyway.

I wonder if those people who are going ‘ugh horsemeat’ are the same people who think nothing of eating a doner kebab from a takeaway after a night out? They will probably eat their kebab without even a thought about how the animal lived and died, how the meat was handled and stored or even what else may be lurking in their large doner with salad and chilli sauce.  I stopped eating kebabs when I made the connection between eating a Saturday night kebab, and spending Sunday mornings glued to the toilet, doing a reasonable impression of a resident of an acute dysentery ward.

If people are that concerned about what’s in their burger, why are they getting Tesco value burgers in the first place?  Surely if meat quality is an issue wouldn’t it be better to eat less meat, but better quality meat?   Humans are ominvores and we dont’ need to eat meat everyday.  We never used to eat meat everyday because meat was expensive.  Unfortunately over the years the customer has demanded cheaper and cheaper meat items such as burgers and sausages, and has grown to treat meat as a ‘filler’ instead of a treat or an expensive flavouring agent.  With this constant demand for cheap meat products, it is no wonder that unscrupulous members of the meat industry may have been tempted to bulk out their ‘beef’ products with stuff that is not exactly beef.

Anyway, that’s the lot from me on this subject and I shall not ‘whinney’ on about it any more.

All sorts of things end up in supermarket burgers and sausages. A good butcher will never put a cheap filler like pork fat into a beef sausage, but this is a practice that goes on all the time with supermarket and other mass market sausages.

  2. I shoot rabbits and pigeons for the pot, with pheasant added when in season. Nice eating, all of them.
I buy a live porker (a boar aged about 4-6 months) from a local pig farmer about four or five times a year. I slaughter it, once it is mine, on the farmer’s property using his humane captive bolt gun. The farmer has not slaughtered it, I have, for my own consumption not for sale, so the entire process is legal and the farmer makes more profit from this transaction than he would if selling commercially. I bleed the carcass at the farm then take it home for butchering. I have everything, meat, offal and even the caul (the fat-laced mesenteric tissues surrounding the pig’s stomach and intestines) without which you can’t produce decent faggots.
When dressed out for butchering the carcass weighs about 60-80lbs. It’s all good, clean meat with no water or other ‘stuff’ injected into it.
The regular cuts of meat are taken off, legs, ribs etc. The kidney fat is saved for rendering into lard. Most of the lesser cuts, the neck, belly flaps etc. I save to make my own sausages. Sausage skins are made from the washed and blanched intestines. There is absolutely no waste whatsoever!
So I don’t need to worry about bastardised processed meats, I make my own, all entirely legally and all whilst living in an urban bungalow, not a farm.

Welcome to Fahrenheit211 Steve. Sounds like you have got a good system there. I’m looking to do simlar with poultry. I’m not happy with what I’ve heard is done to poultry in the processing stage, to give supermarket style meat. I’m currently working out the practicalities of buying in and raising some chickens for meat and eggs and maybe moving on to turkeys later.

I thought most of the cheap burgers was cereal and other fillers. I think we now know what the ‘other fillers’ are.
