A pox on the office of the Surrey Police and Crime Commissioner.

The dissolute Rake, gambles away his fortune whilst catching the Pox in the Swan tavern. From Hogarth’s ‘Rakes Progress’.

There are some things that the human body picks up which are with the person for life, like Herpes for instance. There are other conditions, such as the common cold or minor food poisoning where if you do the right things to alleviate the condition, often go away when they have run their course.

As it is with the human body, so it is with the national political body, some problems are with us for the forseeable future but with others we just need to wait and take the correct action when the time comes. Not coming into the first category of immutable problems but definitely coming into the second is the Police and Crime Commissioner for Surrey, Mr Kevin Hurley.

Some people may be aware of Mr Hurley’s recent Twitter meltdown in which he threatened arrest for those whose views he disagreed with. More information about the background to Mr Hurley’s Twitter row can be found at the blog of Nonjob1, which can be found here: http://nonjob.tumblr.com/post/97036181637/surrey-pcc-kevin-hurley

In the Twitter exchange you will see that Mr Hurley has dug himself in a great big hole by trying to play at being ‘Racism Rambo’.

Sadly, there are lots of people in positions of authority who, like Mr Hurley, have swallowed whole the idea that all culures are equal, even though evidence shows that they plainly are not.

Mr Hurley’s attempts to play the hard man on Twitter have misfired badly, not only has he made himself look foolish and brought his office into disrepute, he has also given me an early candidate for this blog’s British Neville Award for September. He has become a bit of a laughing stock and has also exposed to a lot of people the attitudes of those who presume to be our ‘betters’.

Mr Hurley should not be allowed to continue to believe that it is either his way or the highway. There are valid views that are counter to those held by Mr Hurley and he should be told, politely of course, but in no uncertain terms, that he was wrong to threaten arrest because of someone else’s mere opinion.

Unfortunately it is not possible for the voters of Surrey to dethrone Mr Hurley before the next PCC election, but in the meantime, are plenty of ways in which you, the ordinary member of the public can let him know what you think of his views, attitude and conduct.

Mr Hurley and his office need to receive a pox of letters, tweets, emails and phone calls over this issue. He needs to be told, calmly and with the use of evidence, that the world is very different for those of us who, unlike him, do not live in an ivory tower.

Don’t forget the ‘snail mail’ as it has an advantage that electonic media cannot and does not have and that is it cannot be blocked or deleted en masse and as in many public sector organisations letters have to recorded as received and scanned into whatever filing system they are using. The PCC office needs a deluge of paper in order to mop up the deluge of authoritarian bullshit that Mr Hurley recently spilled.

Worth the trouble? Gosh, my old stamp-cost intolerance just kicked off!

  2. I am shocked at the behaviour of this man. It is so outrageous can’t help imagine it being a parody account. His tactics are very outlandish and he comes across as a bully.

Maybe there is more to this person than just a PCC?

  3. Worrying.

A POLICE Commissioner has been forced to apologise for saying “fans rushing out of pubs towards Leppings Lane at the last minute” were partly to blame for the Hillsborough disaster.

Surrey’s Police Commissioner Kevin Hurley made the remarks in an interview with his local newspaper.

He used the 1989 disaster which claimed the lives of 96 Liverpool fans as an example of why he believed fast-tracking of junior officers should not be introduced.

Yesterday he was forced to apologise for his comments, and claimed he had made an error.

  4. Mr Stewart was one of three senior officers who approved the hospitality given to up to 20 members of the force between July 2005 and October 2006 – the month when Chief Superintendent Kevin Hurley spoke at the opening of the £23m Scientology centre in London, saying the group was “raising the spiritual wealth of society”.

      WHAT!?

They are on the verge of ben banned here, as “Verfassungswidrig, I.e, anti constitutional.

They have been on the Verfassungsshutz watch list for YEARS. (Similar to the British Special Branch… but with differences.)

  5. It is very strange behaviour for a cop or ex cop. Looks like his is going after one person to make an example of, yet the person he has as a target doesn’t come across as a racist. Hurly would have the time of his life on stormfront, begs the question why he doesn’t go there.
    Narcissistic behaviour?

This whole mess, along with the Shaun Wright situation, are sad illustrations of what might have been a good idea (elected police commissioners) was ruined by politicians who couldn’t run a p*ss-up in a brewery. They set up an environment where the public were not engaged in the election, candidates were mostly self-interested politicos who had messed up elsewhere, and worst of all, there’s no mechanism for getting rid of these clowns in between elections. A modern democratic system should never have set up a situation without the possibility of recall, and it’s all the fault of this government whose social equality instincts outweigh their common sense.
