An ideology that forbids female faces is an ideology that oppresses women.

The appalling ‘faceless doll’ that British Muslims appear to be queuing up to buy.

Extreme misogyny can be a feature in many different religious beliefs, but often this extreme misogyny is confined to those who could reasonably be described as extremists. Not so with Islam where an extremist interpretation of the doctrine of ‘aniconography’, or forbidding of graven images, is more mainstream than extremist. We can point to examples of extreme misogyny when it comes from Christians and Jews and know that these are the actions of a small number of those who are, for want of a better phrase, on the very far right when it comes to religious observance and interpretation. However, when it comes to Islam, what we non-Muslims would class as extreme, or consider as an over-pious interpretation of a religious text, is very much part of mainstream Islam, and not any of its extreme variants.

A worrying example of Islamic misogyny has popped up in Lancashire, where a manufacturer is producing a female doll, with no facial features. Now, although this faceless female doll is produced to confirm with Islam’s extreme interpretation of what was originally a Biblical prohibition on graven images, and their worship, I shudder to think what sort of lesson this doll gives to young girls. If even their female dolls have no faces, no individuality, no personality then what does this tell Muslim girls about the position of women in Islamic society? It tells them that women are of less value, that they are mere chattels of men, with no personality and no value other than as men’s playthings or as vessels for creating the next generation of Muslim men.

This faceless doll story should be a matter of concern to any person who believes that men and women are of equal worth and it illustrates quite clearly the dark, misogynist heart of Islam.

Here’s the article from the IB Times:

A faceless doll wearing a hijab has been created for Muslims girls in Britain, news service Asian Image has reported.

The featureless doll was designed that way to comply with Sharia law, which forbids graphic representation of God, the prophet Mohammed, his wife, family, friends and all living things – in roughly that order. The doll costs £25 ($40).

The “Deeni Doll” was manufactured in China and designed in the UK by Ridhwana B, a former teacher at a Lancashire Muslim school.

“I came up with the idea from scratch after speaking to some parents who were a little concerned about dolls with facial features,” she said.

“Some parents won’t leave the doll with their children at night because you are not allowed to have any eyes in the room.

“There is an Islamic ruling which forbids the depiction of facial features of any kind and that includes pictures, sculptures and, in this case, dolls.

“I spoke to a religious scholar in Leicester who guided me through what was and what was not permissible when producing the product.

“The Islamic range in kids toys is quite limited at the moment with few choices. Although this project took a while, I am looking at researching other ideas in the future,” she said.

I shudder to think what other ‘Islamic toys’ Ridwhana is planning for the future. Will we be seeing a toddler-size imitation (we hope) suicide belt, or a ‘burkha Barbie’ or even an ‘Abdul the Jihad Engine’ train set? If I had a daughter I would not dream of buying toys that encouraged her to consider herself as a third class citizen, but in Islam, bringing up your daughters to believe they have no value, seems to be worryingly normal.

The IB Times continued:

Ridhwana added that some people might find the doll strange, but she has had a positive response from many parents.

“We have produced a limited amount at the moment but already I have had parents take up the order.”

This doll isn’t just strange, it’s an abomination. The fact that there are, according to Ridhwana, orders coming in for this doll should give us all cause for concern. It also helps to give the lie to the oft quoted statement that the problems with Islam come from a tiny minority of extremists. If there are people willing to buy this crap for their daughters then that means that there are a lot more Muslims in Britain with a challenging interpretation of Islam than we have been led, by our Governments and media, to believe.
