St George may or may not have been a Roman soldier of Greek extraction who was martyred by the Emperor Diocletian for refusing to give up his Christianity, but by dint of custom, history and monarchical edict St George has become England’s patron saint.

Some of the myths and legends surrounding St George show him as being a strong willed, honest, faithful man who refused to compromise with the Roman paganism that he found abhorrent, and these qualities are those that should still be admired today. St George allegedly grew to prominence in England when King Richard I prayed to St George for victory in battle during the Crusades. The King’s forces won the battle against the Muslims and therefore, over time, St George replaced St Edmund as England’s patron saint.

At a time when England and indeed the United Kingdom as a whole, faces horrific threats from Islamic terror, violence, rape and corruption and where too many of our politicians are craven appeasers to that ideology, there has never been a more appropriate time to celebrate the life of a good man who had the courage to say ‘no’ to an emperor. Maybe it’s time for all of us who are opposed to the violent and oppressive ideology of Islam to celebrate St George’s day no matter what religion we practise. The sort of qualities that St George was said to possess such as efficiency, honesty, fealty and courage have not gone out of fashion and are still much needed today. The enemies that England faces are not just an enemies of Christians, but they are the enemies of all good people whether they have a religion or not.

So why not stick two fingers up at the appeasers and celebrate St George’s Day.
