“Equal burden means that every Israeli citizen must serve in the IDF. In practice, however, 67 percent of the Jewish community and just 50 percent of all Israelis perform national service. To put it negatively, 50 percent of young Israelis are exempt from this burden, while the other half of society has to carry the extra weight.
Those who are exempt are primarily Arab Israelis – both Muslims and Christians, religious Jewish women, Orthodox yeshiva students, and other Jewish young men and women who can’t serve in the army for physical or psychological reasons. There are also thousands of Israelis who refuse to serve in the military for political reasons.
The newly-passed “equal burden law” is intended to enforce enlistment of all eligible people to the Israeli army or to some other kind of national service. However, the truth is that this law really targets only the Orthodox yeshiva student.
Yeshiva students are religious Jews who study Torah as a way of life. It is their profession, which for the Orthodox community is the highest achievement a Jew can attain. Torah study is perceived as one of the most important biblical commandments, and from the religious point of view, Israel cannot exist without these students, whose fight for Israel’s existence in the spiritual realm is deemed even more important than fighting for Israel on the battlefield.
Forcing yeshiva students to enlist is therefore is seen by the Orthodox as an attempt to stop Torah study all together. From the legislators’ point of view, however, many yeshivas have become places of refuges for religious Jews who simply don’t want to serve in the army.”
To be paid by the State of Israel to study the enormous textual and spiritual heritage of Judaism is a massive privilege given to the Haredim of Israel. What the Haredim possess, and which was given by the State of Israel at its recreation in 1948, is an organised national programme of Bible, Talmud and Halacha study, which is something that has been denied to Jews since the creation of the Diaspora in the 1st and 2nd Centuries CE. However, this privilege should not be seen as an entitlement that carries with it no obligation to anybody or anything else. In a state with no enemies and a socialist magic money tree then maybe it could morally and ethically be seen as a contribution-free entitlement, but we don’t ,you may have noticed, live in an ideal world. Israel is surrounded by murderous and bloodthirsty enemies, who follow an ideology shot through with-Jew hatred. It is right that the Haradim serve in the Israeli military. It is right that they play their part in defending the society that gives them so much. It is good that a Jewish state supports Jewish religious learning, but it doesn’t come free. Freedom to learn, costs, and the Haredim should play their part in paying the price.
This new legislation is not an attempt to destroy Torah study, because a man should use his hands to build a house for his family and secure it before dedicating his life to the study of Torah. Even the greats of Jewish learning such as Moses Maimonides, had other work, apart from the study of scripture. Those possessed of intellects that are the ‘best of the best’ among Jews should have the honour of being fully supported in full-time Torah study, everyone else, even if they are engaged in intensive study, should both work, and serve in the army that protects their way of life. The religious Haredi life should not be taken up for base temporal reasons like avoiding army service, it demeans the idea of choosing to live by extra religious strictures and robs Israel of valuable and much needed potential military personnel. I would like to add that I mean no disrespect to Haredim in general, as my experience of them was of them was they are in general, a pious, moral and honourable, although sometimes remote, people, but the freedom to study away from the immediate threat of pogroms and exile is bought for them by the Israeli Defence Forces and they must play their part in them. Freedom never comes free.
