Guest Post – Did Tom Dupre do anything wrong?

Following on from the resignation of celebrity nationalist Tom Dupre from the co chairmanship of the Identitarian group Generation Identity, a regular guest here, Joshua Winston, has brought out his own personal comment on the situation. I’m neither a fan nor a member of Generation Identity, but I have in the past applauded the effectiveness of some of their stunts and their declaration that they are not ‘national socialist’. However, the news that Generation Identity tolerated a full on Nazi in their ranks and may have allowed this person influence over the group for a considerable time, something which spurred Mr Dupre to resign from GI, tends to undermine GI’s statement that they are not National Socialists.

This is an excellent article by Mr Winston and I find myself in agreement with his sentiments on a number of points made in this piece. I particularly agree that Mr Dupre was correct to exercise his conscience when he was presented by the Observer newspaper with the results of their investigation. In addition, I also agree that GI may have handled this badly and created some PR problems for themselves, and with Mr Winston’s assertion that I don’t think that we’ve seen the last of Mr Dupre.

Tom Dupre – a story that is not a story. By Joshua Winston

Truth be told, Tom Dupre did nothing wrong, so far as I know. His crime was trying to smuggle some alcohol into a European Generation Identity camp on a weekend, and being intolerant of Nazis. A crime treasonous enough to merit bringing back the guillotine, according to some. And then he stood down as the leader of the UK branch when he discovered a Nazi was in the ranks. This is laudable stuff. The lad drinks whisky (the Scottish kind) and he has an aversion to Nazis. The media have given him a pass of sorts, because he stepped down, but no mention has been made of Hope Not Hate continuing to employ and pay Matthew Collins (a self-professed p*ki basher) as head researcher and writer.

Tom stepped down from being co-leader of the UK branch of Generation Identity because he wasn’t comfortable with having life-long Nazis in the group. End of story. No big deal. Forget about it and move on. The European branch of GI couldn’t let it go, however, the best they could do in order to smear and discredit him was to say that he likes some alcohol at the weekend. Big deal. I could be drunk as I’m writing this. Who cares? We live in the West. We don’t get stoned for drinking alcohol. They forgave the Nazi Tore Rasmussan for his multiple crimes, but poor little ol’ Tom isn’t allowed to have a sip of whisky. He should have gone and thrown a Molotov cocktail threw a window, perhaps that would have encouraged GI to show some lenience and redemption.

Tom’s only crime, in my eyes, is one of naivete. Who on God’s green earth did not think that a right-wing movement wouldn’t contain a neo-nazi or two? It’s the reason Tommy Robinson disbanded the EDL – they were attracting the wrong kind of people. And, conversely, who on God’s green earth does not think that Hope Not Hate and Momentum and Labour and the Socialist Workers’ Party aren’t filled with hard-core antifa members?

Further, who on this planet does not think that both sides haven’t been infiltrated by the other side? I can guarantee you that GI have many leftist plants in them to the same degree that I can assure you these leftist groups have right-wing plants in them also. Be patient, it’ll all come out in time.

The most interesting thing for me will be Tom’s next move. The media over here have openly stated that Tom is the type of person that the left FEAR. He has intellect, ambition, vision, charm, is articulate, educated, and easy on the eyes. If anyone can bring the left down, Tom can.

I’ve only met him twice, and I’ve drunkenly whatsapped him on many occasions, to which he has always replied, but out of all of the “right-wing” leaders I have met, and I’ve met and engaged with them all, he has impressed me the most. I personally don’t care what happens to Generation Identity, either UK or abroad. They have shown themselves to be amateurs. Tom Dupre has a future, and if you watch this space, you’ll find out what his next move will be.
