Friday Night Movie number 141 – Man On The Run

A very intriguing movie for you all this weekend. ‘Man On The Run’ is a 1949 drama centred about a deserter from the British military during World War II who, when blackmailed by a recently demobilised soldier, flees to London. Down on his luck and low on money, the deserter, Sgt Peter Burden, visits a pawnbroker intending to sell his revolver in order to pay the rent for his small and dingy flat.

Unfortunately for ex Sgt Burden, whilst he was visiting the pawnbroker, a group of robbers burst into the pawnshop, battered the shopkeeper and fled. Whilst fleeing the robbers fire at pursuing police officers, killing one.

There then follows a massive police hunt for the killers of the police officer, but because Sgt Burden, played by Derek Farr, was seen with a gun at the same time as the robbers burst into the shop and unlike them was not wearing a mask, police attention turns to him. Burden then finds himself in the invidious position of being innocent of a murder but who felt unable to go to the police because of his status as a deserter.

Burden realises that he needs to prove his innocence and he finds an unlikely ally in the form of the widow of a man who did not, like Burden, shirk his duty and who died on the battlefield. She assists him in his quest for the real murderers and by doing so places herself at significant risk of harm.

This is a fast paced and gripping drama that really entertained me and I hope that you will enjoy this movie as much as I have done.
