From Elsewhere: The growth of the ex-Muslim movement

There’s a pretty good article over at the Toronto Sun by Farzana Hassan about the growth of the ex-Muslim movement and the challenges that they face. It mentions many of the names that those of us who are familiar with the ex-Muslim movement know but I’m pleased to see these individuals getting additional publicity.

Farzana Hassan said:

It is widely known that apostasy in Islam carries a death sentence or at least severe public and private censure. That is why a great number of ex-Muslims hide their disbelief from family, friends, and society. However, some noteworthy ex-Muslims have tried to address this phenomenon by proclaiming their apostasy and encouraging others to do the same.

Closet atheists, agnostics, and ex-Muslims face greater threats in Muslim majority countries. In response to all of this, we now have ex-Muslim YouTube stars like Harris Sultan, Apostate Prophet, Ghalib Kamal, and others creating forums for people struggling with their faith to also come out and speak about it. They appear to be very busy, as their lines keep ringing, their guest lists keep growing, and their YouTube followings keep increasing.
