The 11th July 2026 is when there is a second reading in the House of Commons for Tory MP Nick Timothy’s Bill to protect freedom of expression with regards to the ideology of Islam. This Bill was introduced to the Commons by Mr Timothy in mid March of this year when he gave his reading of the Freedom of Expression (Religion or Belief System) Bill.
This Bill if passed into law will go a very long way to protecting Britons freedom of expression with regards to Islam. However it will also prevent bad actors exploiting aspects of the Communications, Public Order, Malicious Communications and Racial and Religious Hatred Acts in order to shut down valid and thoughtful criticisms of Islam and the behaviour of its adherents. This will remove a great deal of what Professor David Betz has called the ‘anarcho-tyranny’ of Britain’s speech crime laws where we have a situation where Muslim clerics can call for our destruction but Britons are forbidden on pain of imprisonment to express opposition to these calls for our destruction.
Let’s hope that this Bill succeeds as it progresses through Parliament and eventually gets Royal Assent.
