Do I smell BS? Possibly.

An old ‘friend’ of this blog has recently popped up in the media and is, as expected, whining louder than a World War II air raid siren.

Yes, the Tell Mama group, an organisation that has been described widely as a bunch of ‘mendacious grievance mongering taqiyya artists’ has emerged into the light to moan about alleged ‘anti-Muslim hate’ in London. Tell Mama are complaining that there have been 1031 ‘attacks’ on Muslims in London. Tell Mama have claimed that Muslim women have in particular been targeted with negative verbal comments on public transport along with ‘hijab pulling’.

Now on the face of it these figures look impressively bad. However these figures look less bad when you start to look at the numbers of alleged attacks in comparison with London’s Muslim population and taking into account Tell Mama’s piss poor reputation for probity.

Firstly the 2021 Census figures show that 1.3 million Muslims reside in London. This makes Tell Mama’s claim of just over one thousand ‘attacks’ on Muslims look very small beer indeed. It’s roughly one thousandth of London’s Muslim population that is allegedly affected by these ‘attacks’.

Now of course I do not want anyone to be physically attacked on the grounds of their religion but when only one thousandth of London’s Muslim population claim to be attacked it’s pretty clear that London is not as unsafe for Muslims as Tell Mama might like to claim.

Secondly if there is, as Tell Mama claim, lots of cases of Muslim women being verbally abused on public transport then what’s the background to these cases? Are they made up of people out of the blue making negative comments to Muslim women on buses and trains etc or were the comments made in the context of some dispute where Muslim women have behaved badly and got some verbal crap in return? We don’t know and I’m not inclined to completely trust Tell Mama’s figures.

Thirdly, as regards the claims of ‘hijab pulling’ again where’s the context? Have people been going around randomly pulling hijabs off or is there more to this claim such as hijabs being pulled off during an altercation where dislike of Islam is not a primary driver? Again we don’t know. Also Tell Mama have form for making or going along with false claims of hijab pulling.

Fourthly, there’s absolutely no detail in the news article that I’ve linked to below in which
Tell Mama are quoted about alleged assailants. We have no idea whatsoever whether these alleged attacks on Muslims come from the indigenous population or were related to inter-minority ethnic conflicts.

What’s clear from the figures (if they are to be believed) is that you have to be a very unlucky Muslim in London to be attacked.

It’s a completely different situation for Christians and Jews. There have allegedly been violent attacks in London on Christians by Muslims some of which have involved extreme violence such as the attack on Christian preacher Hatun Tash at Speaker’s Corner and an attack on a church in Wembley by a mob shouting ‘allah hu akbar’.

Jews make up a tiny proportion of London’s population of 9 million. There are only 146,000 Jews in London yet according to the Community Security Trust, there were 1926 incidents linked to Jew hatred across the UK in 2026 and as London contains the majority of Britain’s Jews (53%) it’s likely that many of these incidents took place in London.

Tell Mama’s figures look terrible but when you start to examine them the faint but growing smell of bovine faeces starts to be detected. An identifiable Muslim walking through a heavily Jewish area of London such as Golders Green is more than likely to get to the end of their journey completely unscathed whereas I wouldn’t rate the chances of an identifiable Jew being un-molseted should they stupidly decide to wander around places like Upton Park in Newham or parts of Redbridge.

I would not wholly trust any figures coming out of Tell Mama. For whatever reason, whether it be to make London’s Muslim population look ‘oppressed’ (they are not) or because they are angling for yet another government grant or to raise their own profile, Tell Mama’s figures look distinctly mild when compared to what followers of other faiths go through both in the nature and intensity of attacks and numbers of attacks.

Tell Mama have a bad record for not being entirely sound when it comes to data and claims. Apart from the aforementioned cases where Tell Mama had made a great deal of noise over false claims of hijab pulling, this organisation has also been caught out claiming that there was a rise in attacks on Muslims when all that had happened was negative comments online following a particularly nasty Islam-inspired atrocity in London. Tell Mama’s claims should always be treated with a pinch or rather a whole sack of salt.
