More censorious types fall victim to the ‘Streisand Effect’

It’s always good to see those with the urge to censor get their metaphorical arses kicked and this story is about one of those occasions where the censor has thankfully not got their own way.

Some readers may be aware of the British social commentator the Reverend Simon Sideways who makes You Tube videos from the cab of his lorry and speaks both eloquently and passionately about some of the problems that Britain and other Western nations currently face. In particular the Rev Sideways criticises the problems caused by massive levels and inappropriate types of immigration along with the ongoing issues that Britons are having with the ‘Religion of Rape and Explosions’.

The channel run by the Rev Sideways has recently run into trouble with the censors at You Tube who objected to a video of his in which he asked the question: ‘What purpose do severely low IQ migrants serve in the British economy?’ He made the point that some of the migrants who are coming here are not fit for any sort of useful work, their intelligence is so low that they would find themselves unable to pass the IQ test for entry into the US military. These migrants the Rev Sideways said were effectively useless and will end being housed and fed by hard working Britons.

Now I do not totally agree with the Reverend Sideways on this issue as I have met plenty of Africans etc who are not as thick as two short planks, but the Reverend should have the right to say what he wants on any subject including this one. The principle of free speech needs to be upheld for everyone not just those who parrot leftist dogma or those who agree with me.

The Reverend’s video was effectively hidden from public view by You Tube, supposedly in an attempt by You Tube to silence this man’s opinions because they and probably a few Lefty whiners objected to them. But, this action by You Tube has rebounded on them spectacularly. In a classic example of the ‘Streisand Effect’, the publicity surrounding this bit of You Tube censorship has had the effect of alerting people to the existence of the Reverend’s output. This has ended causing many more people to not only subscribe to the Reverend’s You Tube channel but also to follow his work on the censorship-free video platform Bitchute.

The fuss that You Tube made over the Reverend’s video has perversely had a positive effect on his viewing and subscription figures, so much in fact that in a supplementary video the Reverend thanks You Tube for ‘doing him a favour’ by censoring his video, as their actions have given him much more publicity.

This should be an important lesson for those who wish to censor others and in particular those Islamic and Leftist groups who wish to use their influence with the legacy social media platforms to remove criticism of Islam. The lesson is that if you censor a person or a group on one platform, there will bound to be another platform that will not censor. Not only that but this sort of censorship damages the reputation of the platform that is doing the censoring. There are less people that trust the legacy social media platforms every time they attempt to play the censorship card. People now know that their stuff is likely to be censored on You Tube, Facebook or Twitter at the behest of various Islamic grievance mongers or Left wing activists and act accordingly by having alternative outlets available.

This is a stunning case of the biter being bitten themselves and a stark reminder that censorship often contains within it the seeds of the censors own destruction. There are for example many more people who have heard the speech by Martin Sellner the Identitarian because he was banned from the UK and censored than ever would have heard it if he had managed to get to London to give his speech at Speakers Corner. I believe he said that the attempt at censoring him has meant that millions of people have heard his speech which would have been heard only by about 50 people had Mr Sellner been left alone by the British authorities to give his speech. This case is the Streisand Effect written very very large indeed.

May I pick you up on a point ? As you say yourself – he said “some of” the migrants, so that doesn’t amount to a generalisation. And if they’re unemployable, then they will either be on benefits, or given sinecures by councils or large employers looking to fill a quota.
As a totally separate issue, this then brings up “positive discrimination” which unfortunately has the obvious effect of making clients wonder if the person they’re dealing with is there on merit or ethnicity, and pisses off their work-colleagues who have to carry them, or – if the work colleague is also from a “minority”, but really is there on merit – causes them embarrassment.
I once had to deal with a London council regarding a refurbishment scheme, and had two West Indians to deal with; one was unbelievably dim and was plainly only there to meet a quota, whereas his boss was as sharp as a tack, way ahead of the usual calibre of people I dealt with on councils, and was clearly embarrassed by his “quota” colleague.
Mind you – sometimes it can be nice to meet a “stereo-type” in real-life: a good friend of mine meets the archetype of the “Scottish engineer” to a “T” – curly red hair, curly red-beard, loud Scottish accent, very “hands-on” with oily bits and design-work, hard-drinking, dead straight with everyone, and careful with money – (I think it’s the porridge that does it….).
