A reminder that although ISIS have no land they are still a problem

It was with great fanfare that the Western media announced recently that the Islamic terror group ISIS had finally been wiped out and that this organisation no longer held onto any territory. But a recent case from Iraq shows that although ISIS have no physical base they still represent a terror problem both for those in Iraq and Syria and to the rest of the world.

According to Iraqi News (h/t ROP) ISIS are still killing and targeting Iraqi troops and civilians in pop up attacks that occur on a sporadic basis. ISIS continue to have dormant cells that can pop up and commit acts of murder and terror. The latest victims were two fishermen working on an island in a river.

Iraqi News said:

Two fishermen were killed by Islamic State members, south of Mosul, a security source from Nineveh police said on Saturday.

Two fishermen were shot dead by Islamic State members in an island in Tigris River near Hammam al-Alil region, south of Mosul,” Cap. Ziyad Iyad told BasNews.

The two bodies were transferred to forensic medicine department in Mosul,” Iyad added.

The article in Iraqi News then goes on to outline other killings that have been carried out by ISIS in the Nineveh region which include four Iraqi soldiers killed along with kidnappings and the murder of civilians. These incidents do show that although ISIS are no longer a pretend state, they are still supported by enough people and have sufficient resources to enable ISIS operatives to lie low and commit these sort of attacks.

This is a matter of concern not just for the long suffering Iraqis, but also for the rest of the world as well. We do not know at present just how many similar ISIS supporting groups may have been lying low and biding their time ready to strike in other nations, including Western ones such as the USA, Belgium, France and the United Kingdom. We do know that ISIS has had some support from within the more radical elements of Islamic communities in the West and with the loss of territory it is more than likely that these hidden ISIS members and supporters may occasionally come out of hiding to attack us. ISIS may no longer hold onto any territory, but that does not mean that the danger from this group and from its supporters is in any way over.
