The German Yom Kippur terrorist

The location of Halle in Germany

Following on from the Islamic savage who tried to engage in a stabbing spree at a Berlin synagogue, there has been another murderous attack on Germany’s Jewish community. This time it seems that the assailant is not an Islamist, which is quite the surprise to me, and is instead a lone neo-Nazi nutcase.

This attacker, who could not gain entry to the synagogue in the city of Halle, which was packed with worshippers on the Jewish Day of Atonement, Yom Kippur, tried to blast his way into the building using explosives but his device failed and synagogue security measures kept him at bay. The gunman, said to be named Stephan Balliet aged 27, attacked the building and, when he was repulsed by security measures, turned his murderous attention to random passers by and those in nearby shops. Press reports state that he murdered two people, a woman in the street who tried to remonstrate with him to stop his outrage and a man in a nearby kebab shop. The attacker then fled, commandeered a taxi in order to escape but was later apprehended by police. Hopefully this bastard will face murder charges and if convicted the maximum penalty under German law which is a ‘life’ sentence although one that is normally on where the offender is paroled after 22 years. I’d like to take the opportunity to pray for the souls of all those whose lives have been taken by this bastard, no matter who or what they are.

There is, many will note, a big difference between how this crime has been reported and how the Islamic knifeman of Berlin. This offender, who appears to have been motivated by far right sympathies, has been named very early in the investigation. The knife attacker who was apprehended by synagogue security staff in Berlin recently was not only not named in full, but was also released by German police on bail pending further investigations. Of course these attacks are not completely alike, the Berlin attack was not one that involved anybody being killed, but I can’t help but wonder if the German police or the mainstream media would have been so forthcoming with a name had this Halle attack been carried out by an Islamist?

From what I can gather about this case what we have here really is a classic lone nutter situation. This is not the same as many of the Islamist cases where there has been long term indoctrination of the attackers either by their mosques or by propaganda from Islamic terror groups. This looks very much like a bedroom dwelling jackboot licker judging by what has been reported about this case so far. This is especially evident from reports of what this attacker was saying such as the Holocaust didn’t happen and that Jews are to blame for feminism.

Some of the reports from witnesses do seem a little hazy, especially the claim that the attacker was armed with a ‘sub-machine gun’. From watching the video on the Daily Mail website it does not look as if this attacker is armed with this type of weapon. This weapon looks, judging by the amount of smoke, some form of black powder weapon, rather than the more modern weapons favoured by jihadists. The weapon does not seem to be firing in burst mode and the attacker seems to have to cycle the gun manually rather than the gun doing this automatically. This suggests to me that at least one of this attacker’s weapons were either home made or of a somewhat antique nature. You can compare the difference between modern smokeless and old style black powder rounds via THIS link.

I can’t help but wonder where the German police were in all of this? If the Germans are serious about preventing murderous attacks on the country’s Jews then why was there not a more significant police presence near the synagogue on Yom Kippur, the holiest day of the Jewish calendar? After all it’s not as if a Yom Kippur service would not be a target in today’s Germany is it? Maybe they were like the British police, taking more time tracking down those who say hurty words on the internet rather than dealing with real and damaging crime? From reading the various reports it seems to me that this attacker could and should have been dealt with much earlier than he was. He had time to set off an improvised explosive device and let off a number of rounds from his firearm towards the synagogue and take the lives of two innocent civilians. I think the German police have failed on a number of levels here both in terms of preparedness and failure to act against this attacker in a timely manner. It’s quite possible that nobody would have lost their lives had the police acted in a more organised and professional manner and that is something that German citizens should be up in arms about.

Or if synagogues could hire armed guards ? I won’t suggest the obvious – that synagogues had their own armed-guards – because others would then demand the same, and we’d be into an “arms race” between religious establishments.

In the US synagogue guards as are the guards of other places of worship are allowed to be armed. Whether they are or not is down to the decision of the place of worship itself. Germany does allow those doing security work, including security work at synagogues to be armed with pepper spray, something that is absolutely forbidden in the UK. When I’ve done the occasional stint as a synagogue guard all I could rely on was a whistle or a two way radio.
