Quote of the Day 26/02/2021 – What’s the point of the Lib Dems?

The fallout from Lib Dem MP and former leadership challenger Layla Moran’s appearance on the BBC’s Question Time programme continues to pile up. Whilst appearing on the programme Ms Moran said that free speech in universities should not be a ‘priority’. I commented on this with an article attacking the Lib Dems for being neither liberal nor democratic in any meaningful sense.

Now the Conservative Woman blog has decided to take aim at the shrinking and laughable Lib Dems. The writer of the Con Woman piece, Paul T Horgan said that the Lib Dems had abandoned the idea of freedom of speech which is one of President Roosevelt’s stated Four Freedoms. Mr Horgan described the Lib Dems as:

Not liberal enough to champion freedom of speech on university campuses, not democratic enough to respect a clear referendum result, time may be up for the Liberal Democrats. The party decided to tweet a video containing Moran’s own exercise of freedom of speech from their Twitter account, officially endorsing her key quote attacking freedom of speech. Then the tweet was deleted.

Obviously someone in the party came to a horrific realisation and censored Moran’s attack on a fundamental of Western civilisation.

The Liberal Democrats are now back to the ghetto of the Thorpe years, a handful of MPs and with little of significance to say over the major issues of the day.

I’m old enough to just about remember the Liberal party during the Jeremy Thorpe years. It was a moribund irrelevance, a subject of jokes and heavily tainted by Thorpe’s alleged involvement in the Norman Scott affair. It’s only purpose seemed to be to prop up a failing and flailing Labour Party in the commons. However, despite all its problems back then, many Liberals did indeed support classical Liberalism. Now the Lib Dems, the successor party to the Liberals, appear to have thrown Liberalism out of the window as well as democracy.

  1. Their regular flirtations with “Palestine” and Moran’s stating that she has “palestinian” roots, a non-existant country, fits perfectly with her decrying free speech, just as her “Palestinian” buddies do, only more heavy handedly.
As you say, they are an irrelevance, unfortunately a mainstream irrelevance with a nasty tendency to Jew hatred.
