With the amount of violent, mostly Islam-inspired, Jew hatred rising in Britain the authorities are looking around for ways to stop it and protect Jews from Jihadis (Jihadis always come for the Jews first but they’ll get round to you non-Jews eventually). The Commissioner of the Metropolitan Police, Sir Mark Rowley has proposed setting up a specialist police unit, permanently sited in North West London where the majority of London’s Jews live, to tackle the tide of violent Jew hatred.
I welcome the interest by the Commissioner in the safety of my co-religionists and appreciate the increased security. However such specialist units might not have been needed and Jews not be forced into what could be termed ‘security ghettos’ had the underlying problems that feeds Jew hatred in Britain been tackled effectively.
Hariv Retig Gur is a writer who has worked as a Middle East Analyst for the Times of Israel and he has said in a post on X that we in Britain should not be building security walls around Jew but instead go after the root cause of the worsening security situation for British Jews.
The writer said in the context of the news of the possibility of this new specialised unit in the Met:
“Speaking from complete ignorance here, but this seems like a terrible idea. As though British police are admitting they don’t know how to protect their society because they are unable to negotiate its social divides and tensions.
It seems to this foreigner — this is a question, because I really don’t know what’s actually happening on the ground — that they shouldn’t be building protective walls around the Jews, but rather going to the source of the problem and rooting it out.
If some radicalized Islamists are the cause of the huge spike in attacks on Jews, then you go to where the radicalized Islamists are. Because they will eventually be a threat to everyone else, too.
There’s no place on Earth in which radical Islamist ideology has taken root where it hasn’t turned its bloody attention to controlling and tormenting local Muslim populations.
Aren’t they worthy of police protection from the violent ideologues? You protect the Jews the same way you protect everyone: by tackling the bad guys. Not by building up defenses around the Jews. What am I missing? Does this idea actually make sense?”
They’ve got a point there. There’s little to be gained with regards to police effectiveness by walling off the potential victims of Islam-inspired Jew hatred, the authorities need to go after the Jihad inspiring bad guys who are behind it.
The point the writer made about the police not knowing how to negotiate British societies new divides and tensions is a very good one. The police are confused. They fall back on the usual policing tools such as reassurance patrols but do not know how to tackle the root causes of the problems that they have been forced to police and to manage.
The answer to these issues is that we are all policed equitably and fairly with the civil law applied across the board. It remains to be see whether the police and the Government will do this.
