There’s been a rare bit of good news from Britain’s House of Commons. The latest attempt to create a pro-euthanasia law has failed. Members of the Commons voted 286 to 270 to dump this latest attempt to push through flawed and dangerous legislation that would legalise assisted dying.

It’s concerning that the vote was so close as it indicates that there are a lot of MP’s who don’t think far enough ahead or clearly enough about proposed legislation that is placed before them. Because the proposed legislation that was brought to the Commons this time has many of the flaws of the previous Leadbeater Bill I would have thought that the number of ‘no’s’ might have been higher. However we should all be thankful that this Bill has been defeated. The MP’s have saved many many sick people, some of whom might not be terminally ill, from being pressured by relatives or society from signing up for assisted death.

I’m particularly thankful as this Bill if it had been enacted would have given the job of killing Britons to a nationalised industry, the National Health Service. Now I don’t know about you but I’ve little in the way of trust that the NHS would manage assisted dying without abuse of any system that might that might be put in place to facilitate and manage assisted dying.

Let’s face it. We cannot trust the Home Office not to fill our towns and cities with imported savages. We can’t trust the Education Department to educate our children properly. We cannot trust the police to enforce the law fairly or equitably or the courts to act with any real sense of justice. We can’t trust the prison system not to let out the wrong prisoners and we can’t trust the Energy Department to keep the lights on. Why on Earth then should we trust the Government department like the NHS to administer assisted dying without killing the wrong person, killing someone at the behest of a greedy or abusive relative or killing those who don’t want to be killed? The answer is we can’t trust the NHS not to do these things. Therefore it is better all round that the NHS is not permitted to kill its patients.

I’m extremely pleased that this attempt to bring in the state licenced killing of innocent people has been blocked. I dare say that the ghouls and utilitarians who want this will come back and have another go but hopefully they won’t be trying again for a while. I’m going to crack open a bottle of Scotch and celebrate the members of the House of Commons doing the correct thing for a change.
