Apparently, following the Tiger incident in a British zoo where a mentally ill man climbed into a Tiger enclosure and promptly got himself mauled to death, there’s been an alleged rash of NHS staff members having a nose around in patient records in connection to this case. This isn’t the first time that this has happened after some or other tragedy.
Guido Fawkes said:
“Yvette Cooper on the investigation into whether the NHS records of a man killed by a tiger at Yorkshire Wildlife Park were breached:
“I take this extremely seriously. I know there’s a specific investigation going into that case, but we just need to be absolutely clear. No member of NHS staff should be accessing records that they do not need to see for medical care and reasons, simply for something to do with voyeurism or what is in the news, or any of that kind of reason…
We have to have firm action against these people. Should be if there are breaches, then people actually need to be sacked.” “
What sort of management and control authority do NHS managers have over their staff for the leaking of patient data to happen yet again? I know it’s hard to sack bad people in the NHS but it’s been forbidden to leak patient data for many years and tracking down those who have done so and getting rid of them surely cannot be all that difficult?
Yet again the NHS has failed to secure patient data. Maybe it’s time for such data to be in the care of patients and not the increasingly data leaky National Health Service? Maybe we should have a medical records system similar to that which can be found in Israel where it’s the patient who holds their own medical records. Yes it’s likely to be inconvenient to the patient in Britain to suddenly have to be the custodian of their own medical records with all that this entails, but it might be preferable to the leaky mess that is current NHS medical records systems.
