Upcoming confidence vote on Theresa May

Prime Minister Theresa May

After weeks and weeks of speculation about whether or not the required number of letters expressing no confidence in the Prime Minister Theresa May by Tory MP’s would be received, it appears that this threshold has now been reached. This means that a confidence vote will be held tonight on Theresa May’s leadership of the Tory party which may precipitate a leadership challenge.

The vote will take place sometime between 6pm and 8pm GMT and is likely to herald a very bumpy political time in the UK. Although I despise Theresa May and the way that she has handled the aftermath of the Brexit vote, I also fear a potential Labour government as Labour will no doubt take advantage of the Conservative Party’s disruption.

Remain supporting MP’s such as David Gauke the Secretary of State for Justice, are trying to shore up support for the Prime Minister by saying that in the event of a new leader being elected then Brexit will have to be delayed. I must admit that we in Britain are in a horrible place politically at the moment. We have a government that unduly leans towards Remain and are failing to implement the Brexit we voted for. But we are also faced with the prospect of the country being wrecked by socialists if an election is called and the Tories lose.

If Mrs May survives the vote of no confidence, and this is likely as some MP’s may want to hold onto a familiar leader rather than risk a new one, then it will further sideline the Brexiteer MP’s. Personally I’d like to risk delay to Brexit and have a new Tory leader that the country can have confidence in and which will abandon the awful ‘deal ‘ that May negotiated with the European Union. If May manages to get through this vote then we can kiss goodbye to the Brexit we voted for in 2016 and we will still be led by a vacillating, appeasing Prime Minister who will not command the support of the majority of the country nor the grass roots of her party.

I think that we are in for the curse of politically interesting times
