Another win for the Free Speech Union

I’m pleased to report that there has apparently been another win for the Free Speech Union. Caroline Farrow a Roman Catholic commentator was invited to take part in an event at Exeter University’s Debating Society, but was then subsequently deplatformed by Leftists

With the help of the FSU the University was able to be convinced that the deplatforming would breach legislation and also the University’s own freedom of speech policy. Guido has broken this story and the full details are over there.

I’m really chuffed to see this nasty group of deplatformers being pushed back against. It is utter madness for an organisation to invite someone to speak but then disinvite them because you don’t like their views. It’s mad enough for any organisation to do this let alone a debating society.

Although I’m pleased with this win, there is much more to be done. I concur completely with the view of this Guido commenter BTL who said that we need better protections for freedom of speech in the UK. This is what the commenter said:

Like many below, I joined as a founding member as I thought it was a cause well worth supporting even if it didn’t impact me directly (not that free speech doesn’t affect me directly just that I’m not a journalist, academic or in any role were someone would come after me). I think it’s a fantastic organisation, though it’s unfortunate that can’t organise event etc. in these corona-virus ridden times.

My only criticism is that it has been reactive in nature since it’s inception and I strongly believe we should be campaigning for a British 1st amendment and an assumption in all walks of life outside that controlled by the government (as a 1st amendment would cover them) that free speech is normal and good, which is certainly not the case at the moment and is pushed by newspaper and TV journalists who always present a bullies on twitter, hate online, bad person to speak at university narrative.

Additionally, our politicians keep enacting more and more laws to restrict speech in England and Wales, and especially in Marxist Scotland. We need to stop this and then reverse it with protections for speech. We should especially put pressure on the Conservatives as they should know better and the fact that they don’t should shame every single one of them.
