Maajid Nawaz appears to be unwell.

Maajid Nawaz. Former anti extremism campaigner, reformed extremist, former broadcaster, now fully embracing his inner tin foil hat.

Either Maajid is taking the piss out of the tin foil hat Christians who are obsessed by the end times that are out there or he’s more than a little unwell in the cranial area. The reason for saying this is a retweet by James Bembridge of a comment by Maajid which said:

Although I believed that groups such Quilliam, which Mr Nawaz founded, which attacked Islamic extremism from an Islamic perspective, might not have much impact outside of the London metropolitan bubble, at least he stood up against Islamic extremism. I admired him for his stance even though his organisation probably had limited impact on the Islamic extremism that is growing in Britain’s Islamic ghettos.

I even agreed with him when he asked awkward questions of those who govern us about the government’s reaction to the Covid pandemic. But sadly over time and in full public view, Mr Nawaz has dived down a number of different conspiraloon rabbit holes and he doesn’t seem to have come out of his sojourn with the tin foilers with any dignity or respect intact.

I remember having discussions with end time Christians back in the 1990’s (when they believed that the world would end in 1999/2000 by which time ‘The Beast’ would have us all wearing barcodes) and they were impervious to reason. They were totally unlike many of the other Christians I met at that time with whom you could have reasonable discussions with and unlike the regular Christians, the end timers were monomaniacs, they could not accept that others might think different or that there are such things as coincidences or indeed that there were other equally valid interpretations of the selected parts of Christian scripture that they relied upon (mostly Daniel, Ezekiel and Revelations) as their own.

It’s a great shame to see Mr Nawaz going down this Christian numerology type of path especially as this sort of numerology is easy to either misinterpret or deliberately manipulate. Mr Nawaz could have continued to be a great asset in the fight for liberty and against Islamic extremism. It’s a damned shame to see him putting out stuff like this. It demeans him and damages whatever cause he might be trying to promote.

I wish Mr Nawaz well and hope that one day he can recover the state of intellectual and religious sanity that he both had and which he represented.

  1. I am not sure what the first 2 Arabic words (that look somewhat like “Ulrac Ji”) mean or where exactly they may be found in Islamic sources but the rest is from Quran 3:54 (Thanks redditer reductios!) The surah refers a lot to Jesus; translations of the verse may be found here: https://myislam.org/surah-imran/ayat-54.

Thanks for that. Odd to see Mr N end up embroiled in Christian eschatology.

  2. Is this really his tweet, his account might have been hacked?

I did consider that at first but old Maajid has been disappearing down the conspiracy theory rabbit hole for a while, certainly since mid 2020. It looked real enough to be the new Maajid to me. It’s damned shame really to see how he’s gone and I wonder if the cumulative effect of becoming an Islamic extremist and then getting out of that world, of the hate and death threats he must have recieved at Quilliam from Islamic extremists who despised him, then becoming a high profile broadcaster and being in the public eye all the time, has negatively affected him?
