It appears that Sir Keir Starmer, the holder of the unofficial record of being the least popular Prime Minister for decades is going to resign from the House of Commons, or rather take one of the Crown Offices that prohibit Commons membership as resignation from the Commons is not allowed. I’m surprised that he’s going so quickly, it’s almost an indecent haste as I expected him to hang around for a least a few more months to avoid plunging the Labour Party into another high profile by-election that will inevitably take the shine off of whatever is left of new PM Andy Burnham’s political honeymoon.

Maybe he’s going now for that reason, to create trouble for Burnham or just as likely he’s got some job offer from one of the big international organisations where shafting your own people isn’t a bar to appointment?

It’s likely that Labour will retain this seat as it’s as solid a Labour seat as you can get in London. Starmer had an 11k majority the last time this seat was fought and the previous MP, the late Frank Dobson, had held the seat since its creation in 1983. The main challenge in this seat may well be the Greens or maybe a nutbag Gaza independent and Andrew Feinstein a lefty activist managed to win over 7000 votes putting him in second place after Starmer on 18,884. There’s obviously a political market for headcase left wingers in the Holborn and St Pancras seat and this is where any upset might come from. I don’t think that the Lib Dems or the Tories or Reform have much of a chance here, all these parties got around 2,000 or so votes each last time.

With Starmer exiting the Commons probably for some high profile highly paid job with some international agency, a terrible Prime Minister is finally gone from the Commons. He will no longer taint the Lower House like an indelible piss stain on a carpet, the only worry is what might replace him in Holborn and St Pancras might be a fair bit worse especially if its a Green or a Gaza Jihad Independent.

What will be the legacy of Starmer a man who the people did not actively choose for any positive reason but only to get rid of the Tories. At present it’s a bit like the reputation of Lord North, the man who presided over the loss of the 13 American Colonies who in the late 19^th century who was viewed at that time as an incompetent pupped of George III. Starmer has done so much damage to the economy and society in the short time he has been in office that he’s going to be viewed by many Britons as a modern day equivalent of Lord North for a while yet.
