Apparently there’s a new craze in rural France, going to massive banquets. According to the BBC lots of young rural French men and women are paying the equivalent of £70 for a four course meal, booze and a sing-along of old songs. It’s basically normal French people doing a normal French thing.
Despite that it has attracted the ire of the French Far Left. One of the Far Left parties there is whining about the fact that the events are backed by a wealthy man who doesn’t follow the lefty narrative on migration and multiculturalism and the fact that the events serve food that excludes Muslims and Vegetarians. Have not these Lefties heard of the principle of free association? These French citizens have the perfect and unalienable right to gather, get pissed and chow down on a pig or three.
The BBC said:
“The Alsace town of Colmar – famous for its half-timbered medieval centre – was the scene last weekend of one of the banquets géants – huge banquets whose popularity in the country has suddenly become a hot political issue.
Run by a company called Le Canon Français (The French Cannon), the banquets are massively attended – €81 (£70) buying you four courses of local gastronomy, all the wine you can drink, and several hours of sing-along camaraderie.
But not everyone is cheering. For the radical left party La France Insoumise (LFI – France Unbowed), the banquets have a dark side.
LFI says it has evidence of racist chanting, and of immigrant staff being insulted. With pork regularly on the menu, they say the feasts are purposely designed to exclude Muslims and vegetarians.
And they point to the financial involvement of an ultra-conservative entrepreneur called Pierre-Edouard Stérin as evidence of a masked ulterior motivation – to promote the agenda of the hard right.
Stérin, a billionaire who made his money in the experience gift-voucher sector, set up a think tank pushing right-wing ideas such as rolling back immigration, stopping abortion and promoting France’s Christian heritage.”
Would I go to one of these events, probably not as I don’t eat Pork, but if I could get a booze only ticket then that would be another matter. But it’s not an event designed for me and my choices. I’m at perfect liberty to set up something that caters for my tastes just as these French citizens are entitled to get pissed, chow down on pig and sing.
The left cannot ever tolerate opposition to their views and this is a classic example of that phenomenon. The idea that someone might want to run an event that doesn’t cater to any of the Left’s pet causes or pet populations whether it be Islam or Trans or not eating meat, is absolutely anathema to them.
Whilst intolerance of others mores or viewpoints can exist across the political spectrum it is most often the Left that reaches for the banhammer or the censorship button or the various policies of controlled speech. The left cannot tolerate opposition power structures, which they may see these banquets as being part of, or views they cannot control.
This story is a useful reminder that it’s not only Britain and the United States who are plagued by outrageous borderline mental Lefties wanting to mould every aspect of society in their ideological image.
