According to the entertainment magazine TMZ and other outlets there’s a very curious case happening at the High Court in London. An unnamed celebrity is bringing an action against The Guardian newspaper and Independent Television News (ITN) to withhold their name from stories related to allegations that have been made about his personal sexual conduct.
The allegations relate to this male celebrity’s private life and concern this celebrity allegedly using his fame and public recognition to charm young women into bed. There’s no allegations as yet that this celebrity has engaged in any illegal sexual conduct, at least according to British law where the age that a person can consent to sex is 16, but from reading around some of the young women appear to be in their late teens and early 20’s. Even if there’s no illegality here these allegations do have a bit of a ‘yuck’ factor to them.
The celebrity is using an unusual legal tactic in this case in that he is threatening to commit suicide if the case goes against him and the Guardian and ITN are allowed to publish his name in connection to the allegations.
TMZ said:
“A big-time celebrity is fighting to keep his identity under wraps amid disturbing sexual misconduct allegations … with his lawyers warning he could take his own life if the claims are made public.
The unnamed star is asking a London court to block two major news outlets from identifying him and reporting allegations that he used his fame to pursue sexual relationships with numerous girls and young women over the years, according to the BBC.
During a hearing Tuesday, the man’s legal team argued the potential fallout from the allegations could be devastating … saying publication would “highly likely lead him to commit suicide.”
His attorneys insist the concern isn’t an admission of wrongdoing … but rather his fear of being subjected to a “trial by media.”
The celebrity denies abusing his fame and influence to contact young women and teenagers in an attempt to have sex with them.
But ITN and The Guardian aren’t backing down … their lawyers argue the suicide risk could be reduced with treatment and that the allegations are too important to keep out of the public eye.”
Whilst I understand that a ‘trial by media’ is a horrible thing for someone to have to go through and is a speciality of the British media especially the ‘Red Tops’ or tabloid newspapers, it is not something that the Press would engage in if there was not sufficient evidence in the case that could negate the danger of a libel suit. For the record and for transparency reasons I, when I was working for the Press years ago, did take part in stories like this but they were only stories worth following up because of the nature of the individuals involved, ordinary people who had done the same were not monstered to the same degree as those in the public eye. The press has a keen nose for stories about celebrity and political hypocrisy such as when a politician is a moralist in public but a libertine in private.
I’m not going to name the person who I suspect is at the centre of this case at the High Court as that would be considered as Contempt of Court and neither, for the same reason, am I going to go too far along the road of speculation as to who it is. But it is a big name and a person who has had increasing amounts of mud thrown at him which in some cases has stuck and had negative professional impact on him.
I must admit that I find the celebrity’s use of the suicide threat if he doesn’t get his own way in this case particularly distasteful. It looks to me like this particular celebrity may be doing this as a last desperate throw of the dice in an attempt to avoid his private life being unmasked. It’s a weak move from someone who I didn’t think would attempt such a ruse.
This man’s name is being mentioned in parts of the foreign press whilst British readers of British outlets are forbidden from even speculating who he might be. This is a very similar situation as to what happened during the Abdication Crisis of 1936 where readers in America could read all the details of former monarch Edward VIII’s convoluted love life and how it made him unsuitable at the time to occupy the Throne, but British readers had no idea whatsoever what was going on with their own King.
If or rather when this story breaks out into the open it’s going to be absolutely massive in the UK. Even if as I suspect there’s no criminality involved in the allegations the contrast between this man’s public image and his possibly quite sleazy private proclivities is going to ensure that this story is going to be a full on feeding frenzy for the British media.
Until then this celebrity is safe as long as this case goes their way. If it doesn’t or the hiding of this man’s identity becomes untenable due to his name being widely circulated outside of the UK, then I doubt that his chances of future employment in British media would be all that good at all.
