When is a Jew hater not a Jew hater? Well according to new guidance put out by the Prevent scheme, it depends on context and as this is two tier Britain whether actions are taken may well depend on what community the Jew hater belongs to.
Britain’s new guidance on tackling Jew hatred (for the record I do not use the word ‘antisemitism’ as that word was coined by a rabid Jew hater) has stated that conduct by children and young people that is ‘just’ Jew hatred should not be referred to Prevent unless there are other extremism concerns. In a way I can see the point of this. Someone expressing a viewpoint that contains Jew hatred might be coming from a place of ignorance, which was the case when I was at secondary school where ‘Polish Jew’ was a regular ignorant insult dished out to the unpopular kids, which could and often was corrected by a quiet word with the child from a teacher or other person of authority in the school. I would rather see someone educated about this sort of casual, low level and ignorant Jew hatred than criminalised. Back when I was at school, where the teachers were of an age to have either fought in the Second World War or had been shocked by the then new revelations of what Nazis had done to Jews, the ‘quiet word’ policy with some ad hoc instruction by the teacher on where casual Jew hatred could lead, worked in the majority of cases of casual Jew hatred. It didn’t work on the hard core of the teenage National Front supporters or the minority of kids who had a fetish for ‘German marching music of the 1933/1945 period, but it worked on the majority.
But the Britain of today is not the Britain of the 1970’s. Jew hatred is much more pervasive now in Britain than it has been for decades. This Jew hatred is not coming from its traditional home on the genuine far right but from Islamic communities and from the Left.
I’m hearing countless horror stories about modern day Jew hatred in schools including stories of Jewish children who have been bullied during the post October 7th Pogrom period and teachers and schools senior management teams failing to acknowledge or tackle what has been going on. One case I encountered that was regaled to me was of a Jewish child in a semi-rural school who started to get aggro from other children for being Jewish and the school denied to the parent’s faces point blank that there was any Jew hatred problem in their school. Then there was the case from a few months back that I encountered where a Muslim parent and a prospective customer of the school refused to have a Jewish child show the parent around the school. In that case the school caved into the desires of the bigoted Muslim and replaced the Jewish child with another non-Jewish child to guide the Muslim parent around the school
Do I want to see Jew hatred tackled in British schools? Of course I do. The problem with Jew hatred in British educational settings is far far worse than it was when I was at school but my worry is that this new guidance might not be implemented equitably.
Bearing in mind the political make up of Britain’s educators, which is seemingly much more to the Left than the population as a whole, I can quite easily see how teachers could overlook some forms of Jew hatred whilst cracking down on others. I don’t see teachers or lecturers treating the same way Jew hatred that might come from, for example a White child who has an affinity with the Restore Britain Party, as they would treat Jew hatred coming from a Muslim child. I can well imagine that teachers would give a pass to the Muslim child who has expressed sentiments containing Jew hatred whilst cracking down on the White non-Muslim or non-Leftist children who say similar things.
Ideally actions against Jew hatred in schools should be taken with dispassionate equality in mind. Every instance of Jew hatred in schools should be tackled either by the ‘quiet word’ policy that worked on most of my teenage contemporaries but I doubt very much that in a nation with two tier policing and administrative practices this will happen.
I can well foresee incidents where Muslim kids say the most outrageous things about Jews but are given a pass because of their religion whilst others who do the same get some form of punishment or a referral to Prevent. This policy is flawed and I don’t believe that it will be that long before such flaws become publicly apparent.
Alex Hearn writing on X said about this new guidance:
“Antisemitism by a pupil should not warrant a referral to the Prevent programme, according to government guidance for teachers Fiona Sharpe, a spokesman for Labour Against Antisemitism, said: “It is unconscionable that the Government should issue guidance which appears to deter people from making Prevent referrals based on anti-Semitic views. “We have seen around the world how anti-Jewish racism drives terrorism. This is not theoretical. Anti-Semitic beliefs led to the terror attack on Bondi Beach that left 15 innocent people dead. Extremist anti-Jewish views drove the attack on a Manchester synagogue in which two men lost their lives. “This is discriminatory guidance that puts the Jewish community at further risk at a time of unprecedented anti-Semitism. It is hard to understand why the Government would choose to show such prejudice against a minority community that is, statistically, at least nine times more likely to be the victim of hate crime.” “
It’s pretty clear to me that this guidance is flawed. It gives politically biased teaching staff an ‘out’ when confronted with Jew hatred among their pupils, especially if the pupils come from cultures where Jew hatred is completely normalised. It’s a recipe for inaction as teaching staff, even school’s senior management teams, might not be aware of any other concerns about a child’s involvement in extremism. Either all instances of Jew hatred should be referred to Prevent or none should be.
I suspect that how this new guidance will work out is that schools will be reluctant to report or refer to Prevent the vast majority of Jew hatred that occurs in British schools. The teachers might be reluctant because of Left wing bias and because they fear violent retribution from radical Muslims, to act against Muslim children and teenagers who are expressing Jew hatred. Instead, in order to tick the right administrative boxes, the safeguarding and Prevent systems will only be engaged when the child or teenager expressing Jew hatred is White British.
In Britain we have two tier politics and administration, two tier policing and courts and it is likely that we will have a two tier system of dealing with Jew hatred in Britain’s schools. This is a Potemkin Village of a policy that will do and achieve absolutely nothing to secure the safety of Jewish children in British schools.
