Friday Night Movie Number 77 – Dangerous Afternoon

A nice little British crime thriller with a very strong female lead cast and based on a play by Gerald Anstruther.

Miss Letty Frost is an escaped convict who has set up a sort of halfway house for retired female criminals. Her life is going pretty well and her major problems centre around managing her somewhat recidivist charges. Things take a turn for the worse for Letty Frost when a released prisoner decides to blackmail Letty.

Letty’s life then rapidly starts to fall apart and this quiet but engrossing film shows her falling into despair and committing more and more serious and far reaching actions to avoid being exposed to her enemies.

This is very much a wordy film, there’s no car chases or anything like that but it’s one that engages from the start. Firstly as you go through the scene setting then the main plot and finally some loose ends and character motivations start to be revealed.

I enjoyed this film, which is one that is very much of its time, and I hope you enjoy it too.

  1. I had no idea that 211 had Friday Night movies ~ loved this one! I enjoy this genre, it is always fascinating to watch such movies that run along the lines of dark psychological intrigue. This movie is along the same lines as “Day of Wine and Roses” and “The Snake-pit.”

Hi Kel. Just got back from a long journey and I’m completely cream crackered so no show for me tonight on Pegida radio. I’ve been doing the Friday Night Movie for a while now. I try to geta film up on as many Friday’s as possible. Sometimes it’s not possible as life gets in the way. I started the Friday Night Movie theme because I try not to ‘do’ politics between Friday night and Saturday night and i wanted somethign to fill that time which was not politics but was nonetheless interesting. I’ve put some of my faves up on here in this strand such as ‘Mr Denning Drives North’, ‘Victim’, ‘The Wages of Fear’, ‘Exodus’, ‘Brief Encounter’ and ‘Ushpizin’along with many others. Running the strand has also helped me to rediscover movies that I may have almost forgotten and introduce me to some gems that I had not yet discovered.
