Some useful information / resources about policing

I’ve never been one of those ‘ACAB’ types. I recognise that societies need to have effective, honest and impartial police forces in order to deal with the inevitable crime that societies, especially advanced and complex ones suffer from. Police forces are also needed in order to deter crime as crime deterrence is much better than having to deal with the aftermath and affects of crime.

However I’m realistic enough to realise that not all police officers or forces are honest or fair. It’s a sad fact of life that police forces and police officers will sometimes fall far short of what we the public expect from them. They will lie, cheat and intimidate people either because it gives them a degree of personal satisfaction to do so or because such conduct satisfies the demands of a particular political ideology that they follow.

Whilst of course it would be silly to say that all police officers and all police forces are bad, we should not ignore what has gone wrong and who has gone wrong. The last ten years or so and especially the last 18 months we have seen police officers cover up crimes either for political reasons or so that they have a quieter life as in the case of the Grooming Gang scandals. Also the pandemic has brought out the very worst of behaviour from too many officers who seem rather too eager to throw their weight around and go after members of the public and intimidate them.

I’ve recently found two resources, one from the Left and one from what could reasonably be called the far left, that give us valuable information, despite where they come from.

The first is from a lawyer who is heavily featured on a channel dealing with young peoples interaction with the police. The video linked below which I’ve put up as I consider it especially useful, shows the viewer how to give a no comment interview to the police. It also outlines the various tricks that police officers may use in order to get a suspect or an arrested person to talk or to break down their resolve to give a no comment interview. I’ve gone through this channel and it does seem to be from a group that leans left but that does not mean that the information is less valuable. In my view, with a few exceptions, good stuff is good stuff no matter where it comes from.

The second resource comes from the far Left / Anarchist leaning bulletin board Urban75. One board member has put up a thread detailing the shockingly large number of police officers who have been either convicted or removed from their police forces because of crimes they’ve committed or misconduct they’ve engaged in.

It is a really shocking list and not only covers general misconduct cases such as officers being violent or dishonest or being caught engaged in sexual activity with other police officers on police premises, but also a surprising number of police officers who have been convicted of some serious crimes. I was shocked to see so many officers who have been convicted of sexually motivated crimes. There seemed to be an astonishing number of officers convicted of child sex abuse offences, rape and for possession of extreme porn. It makes me wonder whether those with such a predilection may choose either consciously or unconsciously, to join the police in order to give them access to potential victims or make their apprehension for their crimes less likely? At the very least it seems to me that vetting procedures for those wanting to join the police have become extremely lax and maybe this needs to be changed.
