Sistah Space – Does retribution and justice cometh? Has £300k of public money gone down the drain?

A few days ago I summarised and linked here to the investigation carried out by the Twitter user and citizen journalist, JustPikachoo, into the Sistah Space charity and the charity’s leader, Marlene Headley/Ngozi Fulani. JustPikachoo delved into the accounts and other information about this charity and opened not just a can but a whole wormery of wriggling Lumbricus terrestris.

The tale of Headley’s charity, its very poor management and the extent to which the national, regional and local political classes have indulge and pandered to it has gripped people. It has become a story that has garnered immense public interest and rightly so. The initial shock and anger at Headley/Ngozi’s attempt to smear Lady Hussey as a racist when Headley/Ngozi attended a Royal Family event was inflamed by the information dug up by JustPikachoo. This information showed that thousands upon thousands of pounds of public money had been granted by local and regional councils among others to Sistah Space and that this money seems to have been very poorly accounted for.

However, there’s a great irony about this case and it is this: Much of what has gone on with Sistah Space and the charity’s seemingly dodgy behaviour would never have come to light had not Headley/Ngozi tried to unjustly play the race card in the manner that she did. Headley/Ngozi’s fake racism claims might have been the key to finding out what has been going on in this very well remunerated and allegedly questionably run charity. Without Headley/Ngozi’s decision to make unjust claims about Lady Hussey, she would never have drawn so much attention to Sistah Space and therefore scrutiny of this organisation’s finances. Without the attention on Sistah Spaces accounts and activity this group could have gone on for years sucking at the very generous teat of councils and other grant making bodies as there doesn’t seem to have been much in the way of interest paid by those who dished out money to Sistah Space into how the money was being spent.

But justice and accountability might be catching up with Sistah Space. According to a report in the Daily Mail (h/t Longrider) public pressure about Sistah Space might be having some effect. It appears that the Charity Commission is ‘looking at’ documentation and other material relating to the Sistah Space charity. The Greater London Authority is also stirring itself to ask whether money granted to Sistah Space was spent in the manner that it was intended to be spent.

It should be noted that at this stage the Charity Commission is not yet holding a formal investigation into Sistah Space which means that how the Charity Commission handle this will have to be watched to see whether they embark on an official investigation or merely do nothing. Personally I believe that the recent revelations about how Sistah Space has been run and the seriousness of the various allegations means that the Charity Commission should investigate if only to clear what is very toxic air around this charity.

Meanwhile the Mail has said that Headley/Ngozi is feeling the heat of public criticism and is bleating about ‘abuse’ that her charity organisation has received online. I’m dubious about Headley/Ngozi’s claim of receiving abuse, such claims could be real or they could merely be an attempt by Headley/Ngozi and others to paint themselves as some sort of victim in all this. However there’s only one real victim in all this mess and that is Lady Hussey. Of course it’s quite possible that some people have said nasty things about Headley/Ngozi, her conduct and her charity, but in the circumstances, which are mostly of Headley/Ngozi’s own making, negative comment is to be expected. What does strike me as strange is that Sistah Space have gone public and said that they have suspended ‘nearly all’ operations with the excuse that it is for ‘the safety of service users and the team’. This is not the sort of conduct that I would expect to see from those serving the needs of those who have survived domestic violence, they should be putting their service users first not running and hiding like this leaving the supposed beneficiaries of the charity without support.

The Daily Mail added that although the Charity Commission is not yet formally investigating, the Greater London Authority wants to take a closer look at the accounts books of Sistah Space. The Mail said: Chair of the London Assembly Audit Panel Neil Garratt confirmed on social media that he has asked the Assembly’s finance chief to ‘look into it’.

He said on Twitter: ‘These are unproven allegations, but part of this thread mentions two five-figure grants from the GLA which may not have been used as intended. As Chair of the London Assembly Audit Panel, I have spoken to the GLA finance chief this morning and asked them to be looked into.’

It’s good to see that the GLA is acting so swiftly here. There has been an awful lot of public money that has been hosed at Sistah Space and it’s right and proper that measures are taken to find out if Sistah Space has spent that money in the prescribed way.

I suspect that this story will run and run and eventually we will find out whether the money extorted from taxpayers that has been granted to this organisation has been properly accounted for. Over £300k was listed by Sistah Space as income in 2021 and this organisation might have managed to get even more money from grant making bodies and local, national and regional government had not Headley/Ngozi not gobbed off with her specious racism claim about Lady Hussey. If Sistah Space have been involved in wrongdoing then we must hope that for them justice and legal retribution cometh soon.

  1. Choosing my words carefully to avoid any legal issues which might be ahead for comments about this charity, I’m sad to hear of Sistah Space’s accounting problems. I gathered from your previous article that there are many unexplained grant transactions and possibly even misuse of funds. And as you say above, shutting down their services for those they support seems an odd way to cope with the publicity they are receiving. In fact, it’s only logical to react like this if there’s something not quite right with the charity. Ms Headley would be wise to explain what’s been going on before it’s dragged out of her and her team by legal means.

  2. The claims of “on-line abuse” which were cited as the reason for suspending operations, should also be investigated: Given that Merlene Headley’s organisation involves the same group of people appearing and re-appearing under a variety of names, it is also possible that the “abusive messages” were generated to provide an excuse to close down in the hope of avoiding scrutiny.

  3. I wonder if anyone else has noted that, in the posed photograph, Lady Hussey is looking towards Marlene, while she is glancing at the camera. I can imagine the thought going through her mind, “See, Sistahs, I’ve made the white bitch grovel.”
Whatever the outcome of the charity investigation, there is no doubt in my mind that this women is an odious, vindictive, race grifter.

I also noticed this but the fact that this picture was featured might be down to a choice by a picture editor. Each photographer at this meeting was probably taking hundreds of images many quite similar to one another. There might have been less eye catching pictures of Headley looking at the camera but this was the one that the picture desks chose.

Sorry, Joe Cynic here, nothing is going to happen, if the silly bitch only learned to keep a low profile and hide out for a couple of weeks, it would already be forgotten. Lets look at it, 1. Brown, 2. has boobs, 3. wonderful effnic name an clobber yo, 4. gets invited to a Royal do, so in with Them. Try to get the money back by all means, but, absent you have pictures of her shagging a Corgi on the palace lawn, she will just wail about dem waycisms and it will all get swept under the rug. If Chuckles had had any jam to him, he would have refused to accept any resignations, and pointed out that if you walk in a door called Marge and walk out called M’Bongo with a bone through your nose, people may just look at you askance.

It’s very likely tht the race card will be played here by Headley and pals and probably some of her political allies. But the important thing is tht these whines are ignored and the accounts are examined properly.

I agree that the King has made a major error in panicking over the claims of ‘racism’ and he along with the Prince of Wales should have kept quiet until the facts were all out.
