Hysterical historical ignorance.

I know that in Western nations there has been a sharp decline in historical knowledge but what happened recently in the Canadian Parliament must surely be the peak of historical ignorance.

What happened is this: During a visit by the Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy to the Canadian Parliament, a 98 year old guest who was invited to the public gallery by the Speaker of the House, was pointed out as someone who had fought the Russians in his youth. However nobody, not the Speaker nor his staff, nor anybody from the administrative cadre of the Parliament had enough historical knowledge to ask the question: ‘So if this man was fighting the Russians in or around the time of World War II, who was he fighting with?’

It turned out that this elderly man, named as Yaroslav Hunka by Sky News, had been a volunteer member of a Nazi Waffen SS battalion. This information about Hunka does not seem to have been hidden because background information about Hunka, including pictures of him in his Ukrainian SS uniform were easily found by historians such as Ivan Katchanovski.

I’m utterly astonished by this incident. Didn’t the Speaker or his staff do any due diligence research on this man? Why did Zelenskyy applaud this man when he must have known, due to Hunka’s age, that the side that Hunka was fighting for was that of the Nazis? Everyone involved in this incident from the Canadian Parliament Speaker, the Speaker’s staff, the Parliamentary staff and indeed Zelenskyy himself has had a massive and unforgivable historical knowledge fail.

If this was some gormless historically illiterate ordinary bod on the street that had made such a mistake we could probably laugh at such a hysterically history knowledge fail. However it is not a man on the street who has made this error, it’s senior members of Canada’s governing classes who have made this error and that level of historical ignorance should scare the crap out of people. These Canadian politicians and their aides clearly do not know history and therefore they cannot learn from it and that’s not what any sensible nation should want from their political classes.

  1. Given the level of anti-Semitism on the Left – fuelled by propaganda about the “Palestinians” (no such people has ever existed – they are ex-pat Jordanians) – I have been waiting for the Left to rehabilitate Hitler. Is this part of it?

I agree that there are massive levels of Jew hatred in the Left. So much so that I once joked that years ago if you wanted to find a bunch of know nothing Jew haters then you had to look to the National Front, now or at least in recent years, if you want to find rabid Jew haters then the Labour Party is where you should look. I don’t think that the Lefties are looking to rehabilitate the Uni-Testicled Austrian, he’s more useful to them as a bogeyman and a diversion from some of the Left’s own monsters in human form.

Where the left may have played a part in they Canadian incident is by their encouragement of dumbed down history teaching. This is the sort of mistake that is made by a person or people who have insufficient historical knowledge.

Is private more affordable than it is in the UK? I know the French state system has its issues but I get the impression that it is better than the NHS

Trudeau showing just how much of an arse he is there. It’s not ‘Russian disinformation’ it’s idiocy by Canadian parliamentarians. Did you notice also how he said ‘celebrate’ Yom Kippur. It’s not a celebration, it’s a time of mourning and repentance. When Trudeau opens his mouth he shows his ignorance.
