I was going to do a long form disassembly of the Home Office’s new plan for ‘sponsored migration’. This policy is going to be disastrous. It will not restrict migration numbers but in crease them.
However whilst I was researching what I was going to write about this issue I came across a statement on what’s wrong with this policy by the Social Democratic Party. I don’t think I can improve on what they’ve written.
The SDP said:
London (29 June 2026) – The Social Democratic Party (SDP) condemns the plans announced by the Labour government for a new community refugee sponsorship scheme as ill-conceived, counter-productive, and further damaging to social cohesion.
On its own terms, the scheme is highly likely to be a failure. Labour’s claim that the numbers will be small to start with means it won’t make any sort of dent in the small boat flows, given unchecked incentives using that route for immigrants and gangs alike. The idea that communities and universities will be “approved” begs the question over assessment criteria, transparency and enforcement within a system that continues to fail on the basics. And the suggestion that numbers within this new scheme will build over time without any indication of limits creates yet another uncapped framework likely to run out of control.
William Clouston, SDP Party Leader, said: “This statement contains yet more dangerous and magical thinking from Labour. The idea that the Home Office is competent to manage the verification of refugee status, strict biometric screening, criminality checks and health assessments before arrival, let alone manage a myriad of third parties with high incentives to maximise throughput, is simply not credible. The public will see it for what it is, another smoke-and-mirrors scheme that will simply lead to more arrivals at a time when the British state’s social fabric and public finances are stretched to breaking point.
“The new migrant flows prompted by Mahmood will be additional to – rather than instead of – existing illegal entries. Further, the evidence on the ongoing social and economic costs of accommodating large asylum populations is overwhelming. Against the backdrop of continued large-scale illegal entries via small boats and other routes, the growing number of tragic cases of appalling criminal acts committed by immigrants, and the lack of trust by the public in the capability of Home Office and Border Force to manage immigration generally, this announcement will come across to many voters as further fuel on the fire.”
The SDP’s Mr Clouston is correct. It’s ‘magical thinking’ by the political classes again. It will not just do nothing to stem the flow of migration it will make things worse much worse. This is a policy that will be abused to hell and back just mark my words.
