Britain’s electricity supply is extremely vulnerable this winter.

Britain, already a nation with a very shaky electricity generation and distribution system, might be facing further potential problems this coming winter. An engineer and blogger David Turver has looked into claims by energy regulators and those trusted with keeping the grid running that Britain is well set up for the winter and has come to the conclusion that those in charge of Britain’s electricity generation and distribution systems are taking a ‘rose tinted’ view of the situation.

Rather than take too many excerpts from what is a highly technical article I’m just going to link to it below:

Reading this report leaves me extremely worried. I have made the mistake of thinking that the situation regarding electricity generation might be better than it might turn out to be. I cannot make predictions but it seems that Britain is sailing very close to the wind regarding energy security. Will we get blackouts this winter? I don’t know, but after reading this article I am not confident that we will avoid them. The blackouts might be localised ones, as were the ones caused by miners strikes in the 1970’s and not national ones but if they come they will be at best inconvenient but at worse highly damaging to our nation and its people.

This problem did not come out of the blue or was due to some unforeseeable problem. This situation has been caused by the political classes insisting that Britain does away with efficient thermal power generation by way of coal and gas with the addition of nuclear and instead relies on unreliable renewables that are subject to the vicissitudes of the weather. To give an example from Mr Turver’s article, a windless day in the UK might also be windless days in those other countries that we buy energy from thereby removing one source of power to keep Britain running.

We are creeping up to the energy abyss which is bad enough but we should be righteously angry at the political classes who by their obsessions with unreliable ‘green’ energy have led us all to this abyss. The problem is when Britain tips into this energy abyss it will not be the likes of Ed Miliband or the many others who have created this problem who will suffer it will instead be the rest of us.
