Friday Night Movie Number 28 – The Wooden Horse

Tonight’s offering is a classic prisoner of war escape movie called The Wooden Horse. It is the story of a group of Royal Air Force flyers who had been shot down by the Germans during World War II and imprisoned in Stalag Luft III, a camp for RAF Officers. This film is the true story of how three airmen escaped from the POW camp by using a piece of gym equipment as cover for the digging of a tunnel.

Shot and acted in the very understated British style of the time and starring Leo Genn as Flt Lt Peter Howard and David Tomlinson as Phil Roe this film is full of the heroism of both those who managed to escape and those who supported the operation to dig the tunnel.

I found this to be a very entertaining film with excellent camerawork and lighting. It was shot on location in Germany, in a specially reconstructed POW camp. This was because the film was made in 1950 and many of the camps that were formerly used by the Germans for POW’s, were being used to temporarily house those displaced by war, and those who had been liberated from Concentration Camps and Labour Camps.

I hope you enjoy this film as much as I have done.
