Friday Night Movie number 130 – ‘Young and Innocent’

Tonight’s offering for the Friday Night Movie slot is an early Alfred Hitchcock film from 1937 about a man suspected of a murder that he didn’t commit. A young film actress, married but who is seeing other men, is murdered. Her body is discovered on a lonely English beach by a man, Robert Tisdall played by Derrick De Marney, who had been her boyfriend in the past.

Because of Tisdall’s previous association with the dead woman the police start to assume that Tisdall is the murderer. In the police’s eyes every bit of evidence seems to point to Tisdall being guilty but he vehemently denies any involvement in the crime.

Tisdall goes on the run and accompanied, somewhat reluctantly at first, by Erica Burgoyne (played by Nova Pilbeam), the daughter of a police chief, attempts to find the vital pieces of evidence that could clear his name and save him from the noose.

This is a great film and a good example of film director Alfred Hitchcock’s early British film work. I found this film gripping and entertaining and enjoyed it very much. I hope that you also enjoy this almost forgotten movie gem from one of Britain’s most famous and well regarded film directors.
