The possible ‘undergame’ regarding Boris Johnson.

PM Boris Johnson.

I must admit that despite voting for him, Boris Johnson has been a massive disappointment. He’s not properly engaged in the culture war that is being pushed by the Left, he’s surrendered to the green extremists, his government has done nothing to defend Britain’s leaky borders, we still have a massive and unchallenged Islamic extremism problem and his government has done nothing to return the free speech rights of Britons that have been stolen from us by the Left. To his credit however he has managed to bring about a departure from the EU something that the political classes fought tooth and nail to prevent happening.

Personally I’d like Boris Johnson gone and replaced by a proper conservative, a conviction politician who will put Britain and the interests of its people first above all other considerations. It is certainly true that Johnson is looking like a lame duck Prime Minister who is beset by scandal either over parliamentary sleaze or alleged covid rule breaking.

But what if there’s an undergame here, one being played by Remainers who would like nothing more than for the current Brexit supporting PM to be replaced by someone who is more conciliatory towards the European Union? This is what worries me.

On the face of it the furore over the Christmas quiz that took place last year and where Boris Johnson asked questions via video link, is a bit of a nothingburger. But it is a nothingburger that is being pushed by media and political types who have a long record for being pro-EU and who have even been rightly placed firmly in the Remainer camp.

What if below the froth of the Partygate scandal is a plot by Remainers to overturn the Referendum vote and drag Britain back to the EU? If they were to try to do this then the first thing that they would need to do is to remove the Prime Minister.

Boris Johnson has been a disappointment in government, a lot of people will agree with me on that but there are worse people who could be occupying the office of Prime Minister. Even taking into account the possibility that removing Johnson is not a Remainer plot, would replacing Johnson with a slippery, untrustworthy weasel-like character like Michael Gove be any better? With regards to authoritarianism then a Gove premiership might be worse than a Johnson one.

Whilst I see the need for a Conservative government to have a proper leader with proper conservative values, I can’t see any of those values being represented in those who are likely to be candidates in a future leadership contest. At present at least, with the possibility of a Remainer undergame and a lack of someone of the calibre of Thatcher waiting in the wings, there could be a case for holding onto nurse for fear of finding something worse.

It’s quite possible that a cumulative series of adverse events and bad responses to them might kill off the Johnson premiership. But, I’d hope that this end of the Johnson show comes at a time when there is a credible Brexiteer who is a proper Tory with liberty positive values to take his place.

  1. Your so right, I also voted for Boris and as a party member at that time (now resigned) I voted for him to be PM and what a disappointment the whole Conservative party has become. I think if the party stands any chance of recovery from it’s present terrible state it needs to undergo a root and branch reformation. It needs a new credible leader, cabinet and Chancellor, then it needs to keep its promises and to try to reconnect with its remaining members few as that might be. I have heard rumours that locally they may not even have enough remaining members to leaflet the area at the next election.

  2. Oh yes ‘culture war from the Left’? What proof do you have of that? Apart from some anecdotal comments. We live in a democratic system where opposition parties get to have their say. Are some of you guys seriouslsy asking that Johnson should criminise his opposition fo hold onto power? It’s been done before in history and didn’t work out well…..

On the subject of culture war how about the hounding of the academic Dr Kathleen Stock from her post because of her views on sex and gender, or the constant push by leftist organisations to revise history, attack historical figures or even demand that their statues are removed, the monothought clique that exists within organisations such as the BBC or the increasingly fragile ecosystem of free speech in our universities. There is a culture war but it was not started by the Right or the Centre Right.

Of course Johnson should not criminalise his opposition that’s a very bad road to go down but a government that was voted in with such a great majority and with great hopes should at least be expected to promote a culture of viewpoint diversity and freedom of speech which he is not doing.
