It seems that the appeal against conviction and sentence submitted by internet comedian Count Dankula has been rejected. The Count, real name Mark Meechan, was convicted at a Scottish Sheriff Court earlier this year after a ‘hate speech’ trial that went on for an astonishing two years.
He was convicted for putting out a joke in which he taught his girlfriends pug dog to do Nazi salutes. This video was obviously a joke, there is no way on earth that this was a genuine attempt to promote Nazi ideology. In effect Count Dankula has been convicted for a joke. He was given a fine of £800 at the lower court.
His appeal was rejected at the ‘sifting’ stage for appeals which is something particular to the Scottish Legal System. There are other legal avenues that Count Dankula can explore and he will detail them in due course. I must admit I was greatly disturbed, as was the political commentator ‘The Britisher’ with the very emotive language used in the communication that Dankula has received from those deciding on his appeal. It looked to me more like the language used by an offended social justice warrior rather than someone working in the court system.
The Count is refusing to back down in the face of these horribly oppressive and easily abused ‘hate speech’ laws. Although he is due to pay the £800 fine later this year, Dankula is refusing to pay on principle. He is not going to back down against laws that really should not be on the statute-book of any civilised free country in the first place. It is likely that his refusal to pay this unjust fine will result in him being brought before the courts and imprisoned. This is where we are now in the United Kingdom, we have become a country where people can be imprisoned for a mere joke. Disgusting isn’t it?
