Brexit day – Free at last, free at last, thank the Almighty we are free at last

This is one of those days when only a quote from Dr Martin Luther King Jr will suffice as a title to express my joy at Britain finally starting the process to leave the European Union. As of 11pm GMT tonight, Britain will no longer be a member of the EU and we enter the leaving transition period.

It’s been a long hard slog for Britain to free itself from the shackles of what was once a free trade bloc but which has since become an authoritiarian monster that has not only controlled every aspect of every Britons’ lives but which also rendered our own Parliament impotent. To get to where we are today has been incredibily difficult. The majority of Britons who wanted to leave the EU and voted to leave the EU, have have to fight battles on several different fronts. Not only have Leavers had to contend with an arrogant EU that brooks no compromise, as we saw from David Cameron’s failed attempts at EU reform, but also from a British Establishment that all too often behaved like fifth columnists for the EU. Members of Parliament from all parties have done their utmost to stop Brexit and in doing so trashed the reputation that Parliament once had. The BBC, once respected as a broadcaster damned itself by putting out blatant pro-EU propaganda in order to try to demoralise Leavers into letting the Europhiles in Parliament just cancel the democratic vote to leave.

The Remain establishment whether in Parliament, the media or the administrative and education sectors did all they could to stymie Brexit but they failed. However in their quest to stop Brexit the Remainiacs nearly destroyed institutions that in some cases had lasted for centuries. The Remainiacs damaged Parliament and damaged the public’s confidence in Parliament and this is damage that may take many years to repair.

It’s not all over at 11pm tonight, there’s still much to do with regards the exit. Britain needs to free itself from the clutches of the ECJ and also engage in trade negotiations with the EU. There is also the matter of the need to put the French and others in their place when it comes to things like fishing. Once we are fully out Britain can be what countries like Germany most fear, and that is a type of Singapore across the Channel. We can be a dynamic, creative and confident nation and one that is the complete opposite of those EU nations that are heading towards either chaos or ossification or both as in the case of France and Germany.

Brexit is a wonderful thing but it is only the start. Britain must set itself apart from the failed policies of authoritarianism that have become normal in continental Europe, we must become a beacon of freedom both economic and social. We have achieved Brexit and that is something that I believe must and should be celebrated, but the battle to rebuild our society which has been damaged by the political Left by way of speech restrictions and censorshop is only just beginning. I’ll be raising a glass tonight to celebrate not only Brexit but also to honour those who have brought this happy situation about. We have our independence day on the first of February, but on the second of that month the work starts to reclaim the things that have been stolen from us, things such as freedom of speech.
