From Elsewhere: Ann-Marie Waters hits sixteen nails firmly and squarely on their heads.

We must counter the ideology that creates such hate-filed and dangerous creatures as this.

I’ve written before how much I admire the words and attitudes of Anne-Marie Waters, she’s a fine writer and an ardent campaigner against Shariah. Here she is commenting on David Cameron’s bit ‘Jihad’ speech that he made on Monday 21st July 2015. Others of course have commented on the Prime Minister’s words some have greeted them enthusiastically and some, myself included, have been much more cynical and harsh (and if you think what I’ve said is bad you should see what the denizens of Twitter are saying about Cameron).

Ms Waters, piece is much more nuanced than mine, she gives Mr Cameron credit where it is due, but does temper that praise by asking whether Mr Cameron’s proposed actions againt Jihadism are ‘too little too late’. She also wonders, as do I and many others, whether the new anti-extremism proposals will be used to silence or bully legitimate critics of Islam just as much as it will be used to stop the gobs of the likes of Anjem Choudhury.

Where, in my view at least, Ms Waters excels, is that she actually suggests workable policies that the Prime Minister could bring in to counter the threat of Jihad. But dodn’t. Ms Waters, outlined sixteen different action points and I believe hit sixteen nails right on their heads.

Here is Ms Waters sixteen action points, which were published on the Brietbart website.  As is usual, the orignal quoted text is in italics and my comments are in plain text.

Publicly acknowledge the legitimate scriptural basis for the barbaric acts of ISIS, Boko Haram, al-Shabaab, and many others. While it may be only one interpretation of Islam, it is an entirely valid one, and indeed an extremely common one.

Agree. Wishing Islam were different and that the peaceful Ahmediyya were the real deal and represented the majority of Muslims and the entirity of Islam, doesn’t change the fact that the violent interpretation of Islam is just as valid as a peaceful one

Condemn the horrific tyranny of Saudi Arabia and acknowledge that, in terms of cruelty, it is nigh-on identical to ISIS. While we’re at it, do not fly the Union Jack at half-mast in memory of its King; who had been one of the world’s most vicious Islamic tyrants.

Although a policy of being more hostile to the Saudi’s may never get past the Camel Corp or the Foreign and Commonwealth Office as it is otherwise known, Ms Waters has a point. Saudi Arabia is a vicious religious tyranny. It oppresses women in ways that free Western women may find it difficult to comprehend. It is a country that executes people for ‘witchcraft’, and where there is a complete ban, outside of ex-pat compounds, on the practise of religions other than Islam. Woe betide you if you are a Christian and you come to the attention of the authorities and as for being a practising Jew there, well forget it.

Get rid of ludicrous and stifling hate speech laws, and stop pretending that people have no legitimate right to fear, or criticise, the religion of Islam itself.

Hate speech laws are part of the problem, part of what is stoking up tension. Because people feel that they cannot make legitimate criticism of Islam or any other religion without fear of the law coming down on them, then this is just ratcheting up the resentment among the general populace. A free society, with true freedom of religion allows religious ideas to be tested in the open marketplace, Islam on the other hand, prefers the big stick and dislikes criticism or forensic examination of its belief system. I will know when true religious freedom has arrived when comedians can do a ‘Life of Mohammed’ film and not get their heads chopped off.

While handing over millions of pounds of British taxpayers’ money to Pakistan, how about a quite word in its ear about the continuing oppression and execution – by law of the land – of Christians in that country?

The plight of Christians and other religious minorities in Pakistan is a scandal and has been so for many years. It is both right and proper that the British taxpayer got some value for all the money that goes to Pakistan. At the very least we should expect that Pakistan protects its Christians, Hindus, Sikhs and others, including heterodox Muslims, from assault and prosecution.

Acknowledge and recognise the hatred of the West preached by the Islamic Republic of Iran. Indeed, to talk about confronting Islamic extremism so soon after your Foreign Secretary supported the lifting of sanctions on this horrific regime demonstrates, yet again, that you simply do not understand the religiously-motivated aims of Iran i.e. to Islamise the world and wipe Israel from the map.

Well said! It is a major mistake for the great powers, especially the Western powers to give Iran a free pass and a seat at the top table. Sanctions should have been kept up and maybe intensified. I feel that the West has been too trusting of the Iranian government and have given too much away.

Change charity laws so that Islamist monsters don’t get to run their own little network of “courts” to impose sharia on Britain’s Muslims, and to terrorise and humiliate women as much as possible. It would also be helpful to recognise and acknowledge that such sharia “courts” are run by jihadists; many who have openly stated their aim to expand their power and to bring stonings and lashings to the streets of Britain.

I couldn’t agree more on the subject of dodgy Islamic ‘charities’, I dislike them just as much as I dislike the fake, ie govt funded, diversity charities. As well as the support for Shariah Law and the jihad that is facilitated by some of these organisations, there are also Islamic ‘Educational Trusts’, sometimes witih bland Western-sounding names, that work to impose mosques in places where the locals really don’t want one.

Throw out all non-British citizens who preach the destruction of Britain and the over-throw of its democracy. While we are duty-bound to protect the free speech rights of our citizens, we owe no such duty to the rest of the world; those from outside who seek to destroy us should be permanently excluded. If the ECHR objects, tell it to, er, mind its own business.

No problem with that at all. If you come to a country as an immigrant then you are duty bound to follow the laws of that country. Preaching the destruction of the nation should have expulsion as the ultimate penalty.

Stop making special laws for crimes related to culture, such as FGM and forced marriage. FGM should never have been made a crime in its own right – thereby offered some “cultural” protection. It should have been robustly punished as grievous bodily harm from the get-go, and non-British practitioners deported for life. Ditto for forced marriage, which should have been punished under kidnap, false imprisonment, and rape laws. Let’s do that in the future.

A very sensible approach. Sometimes it’s not new law that is needed but the enforcement of older more tried and tested laws.

Stand up to that little coterie of Islamic dictatorships and theocracies at the UN known as the Organisation of Islamic Cooperation. Why on earth Sayeeda Warsi was allowed to commit the UK to supporting Resolution 16/18, a plot by the OIC to criminalise criticism of Islam on a global scale, is frankly a mystery. (I have written about this before).

Yes the OIC are a bunch of theocracies and dictatorships. The Prime Minister took his eye off of the ball when he promoted and hung onto Warsi. That woman is dodgy through and through.

Recognise the religious nature of the threat faced by Israel, and that the murdering terrorists of Hamas are driven by Islamic fanaticism. Hamas, in its founding charter, specifically states that its fight is against Jews, and yet we pretend this isn’t a factor. Why? Because if we acknowledge the religious character of Hamas, we may need to examine the scriptural basis for it…which could unearth some inconvenient truths.

Again I agree. The conflict in the Middle East is not about land or refugees or anything else that is put forward as a ‘root cause’ of the wars in the region. If if was about land or resettlement of refugees then it would have been over long ago and the whole region would be basking in the sunshine of peace and cooperation. It’s about religion, or more specifically the virulent hatred that Islam feels for Jews. Examining with an honest heart the character of Hamas would indeed force many people in the West to come face to face with inconvenient truths.

Understand and acknowledge that the horrific elements of Islam are not the preserve of a “tiny minority of extremists”. They are extremely common and have much support. The Pew Research Center has carried out the largest survey of opinion in the Muslim world. It showed that clear majorities in countries including Pakistan, Egypt, Afghanistan, and Bangladesh, support the death penalty for apostasy and adultery. Overwhelming majorities in many countries support sharia as the law of the land. We need to face up to this reality.

This would be a welcome and honest move. The surveys do show that what we would call ‘extremism’ in matters of religion, is often ‘normal for Islam’. The problem is not just the ‘tiny minority of extremists’ but the far greater number who approve of the actions and motivations of extremists.

Give a clear message to Muslims in Britain that yes, this is their country, but like all people in this country, they are obliged to obey the law. Be clear – when the law clashes with Islam, the law wins. No ifs, no buts.

Yes it would be good if Muslims accepted that ‘the Law of the Land is the Law’. I’ve no personal problem with allowing reasonable accomodation for relgiious beliefs, I think that is part and parcel of a just and free society, but Islam and too many individual Muslims have taken the mickey out of the idea of ‘reasonable accomodation’.

Celebrate, and teach children, what is great about Britain (including England if that’s not too much trouble) and its past. Tell children about the great writers, the inventors, and the political trailblazers that this country has produced. Be rather clearer about what British values are. Let’s talk a bit more about Parliamentary democracy, freedom of speech, the rule of law, trial by jury, judicial and press independence, and gender equality.

These are the true British values, not those which are quickly cooked up by civil servants and quangos and imposed on high like the edicts of a capricious and dictatorial monarch. We, and especially our children do not know enough about British history and neither is the education system correcting that fault. Our teachers are disregarding the canon of British literature and failing often even to impart a basic knowledge of the structure of the English language. Too many Britons know barely enough about the politics that rules them to make an informed judgement and a significant minority take little interest in politics and democracy. Ms Waters is correct that we need to celebrate ourselves.

Let the jihadis go. If people want to go off and fight for a group that seeks the destruction of this country, do not pity them – expel them.

Yes, if these violent Jihadist savages hate Britain so much and wish to live in or fight for an Islamic cause, tghen they are obviously not the sort of people who could be termed ‘condusive to the public good’.

Give resources to our police and armed forces. We face a global fight for our very survival – surely this fight should be our priority, and public funds directed to reflect this.

Agree again. Far too man police resources have been wasted in ‘softly softly’ approaches to the problem of Jihad. We do need to recognise that we are engaged in a fight for our own survival and the policing, security and military priorities should reflect this reality.

Above all Mr Cameron, grow a backbone and put the people of this country first.

Some of us have been waiting for years to see when Mr Cameron’s ‘backbone’ will appear, it’s should be considered to be ‘missing presumed dead’.

Yes, I agree, this is a very good summing-up of this real and ever increasing problem and a route map forward for other religions that Cameron himself would not have the intelligence to think through nor the bottle to implement, even if he did.

Many of the other religions already, obey the law, avoid telling their adherents to self explode in public places, and don’t take the pies out of reasonable accommodations for religion. Ms Water’s suggestions are far too obvious and sensible for Cameron to implement.
